Laurel Statz

"The Spectator"

December 2025

Laurel Statz is a painter and Madison area native. Her work, while figurative, is influenced by abstraction and minimalism. The paintings often have a quick and instinctual nature, capturing just what’s needed. While she often times herself to eliminate extra details and over-precision, she has ventured into more detailed works as well. Laurel does not attach narrative to her pieces. Rusty Belle is a nationally touring roots-rock junk-folk trio out of Amherst, MA featuring sibling harmonies, a homemade rhythm section and rock-solid musicianship and songwriting. They recently recorded an album with Chris Smither (who wrote Love Me Like a Man, a song made famous by Bonnie Raitt) who says of them: "Rusty Belle...this is some clever shit...clever both musically and lyrically...if that's all there were to it, you could leave it. but it's like clever with a sledgehammer and a knife. I love it." They are touring on the success of their most recent album Common Courtesy which came out last September. Legendary DJ Vin Scelsa, who hosts "Idiot's Delight" on Sirius/XM and WFUV, says "I can't stop listening to it. Each time through I say, okay, that's my favorite song ... and then next time I say it for a completely different-sounding song ... and the next time for yet another. Etc. This is a very strong recording."

"The mixing of genres, the interplay between the band members, and their versatile musicianship has given Rusty Belle a unique sound, and with the even more unique tact of not worrying about fitting into a particular place musically for marketing purposes keeps each album fresh and keeps them evolving." - The New York Examiner

"These artists put their spirits into every note and lyric..." - Entertainment Realm

Rusty Belle will be touring the MidWest for the month of August.
