The Places We Leave Behind

Artist Bio / Show Statement:

I photograph the traces people leave on the places they pass through. Across continents and decades, my subjects are often the same: weathered surfaces, doorways and thresholds, working people, and the quiet geometry of buildings that have outlasted their builders.

My primary medium is black-and-white film, printed in the darkroom. Silver and paper let me hold time still while admitting that time wins anyway. But I have often lived where a darkroom wasn't possible, and in those places I work in digital color. Color is the exception, and it has to earn its place. I turn to it when circumstance calls for it, or when the subject depends on hue and the picture would collapse without it.

These photographs come from travels through France, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, India, Bahrain, Panama, New Zealand, Iceland, and elsewhere. I'm drawn to the monk, the shepherd, the truck driver, and the tobacco seller as much as to gates, bridges, and pots. The people and the structures are the same kind of evidence: proof that someone was here, worked here, and made something to last.

I don't look for the dramatic or the exotic. I look for the moment a place shows its age, its labor, or its patience. I want the viewer to slow down and see what is already there.
