Laurel Statz is a painter and Madison area native. Her work, while figurative, is influenced by abstraction and minimalism. The paintings often have a quick and instinctual nature, capturing just what’s needed. While she often times herself to eliminate extra details and over-precision, she has ventured into more detailed works as well. Laurel does not attach narrative to her pieces. Rather, she thinks of them like a journaling process for her scatter-brained psyche. The figures in the pieces are meant to be processing tools for the artist and the viewer. Long, long ago, on November 18, 1977, Lou and Peter Berryman became the first band to ever play the now defunct Club de Wash, and they kept at it once or twice a week for almost ten years. Now, 32 years later, they plan to celebrate this dubious achievement by resurrecting a night of their old Club de Wash songs, such as Are You Drinkin' With Me Jesus, the Williamson Street Shuffle, Pflaum Road, Landlady, Dingy Freighter, and You Can't Eat Ooba All Night. This is the second annual Old Berryman Songs Night at Mother Fool's. Last year the event turned out to be a glorious struggle in which amnesia and nostalgia fought to a draw for the upper hand. Everybody had a ball.
