"Permutations of Red Pine"

September 2026

A Red Pine tree was planted at the corner of 212 Merry Street in the late 60s that evolved over the decades into a cooperative household. We are making it a place for comity and creativity; Clarity and the imagination; we change detritus of early 21st century late stage capitalism into art, shrine, paintings, music, sculptures, urban Permaculture and homesteading experiments. We appreciate the used, the worn out, ever crumbling and reassembling; as we all are all the time.

Spider Trio is based in Chicago. Dan McNaughton, bassist and leader/composer, started the group in 1997 in New Orleans. That period saw the recording of the first Spider Trio cd, Permission.

A move to Ann Arbor saw further performances with various lineups and the release of Permission in 2001. The current members are Bryan Pardo, tenor saxophone; Bonbonfera Tim Keenan, drums, and Dan: this unit has been together since 2004. In May of 2007 the second Spider Trio cd, Presences, came out.

Bryan, Tim, and Dan all have extensive backgrounds in jazz. They bring a variety of experiences to the group: Dan has played punk rock, klezmer, and classical music; Tim---s exploration of the world of drumming has included the Afro-Cuban and West African traditions; Bryan started the Ann Arbor klezmer band Into The Freylakh and leads Balkano, a Balkans-jazz fusion group.

The group has performed at various venues in Chicago, including the Velvet Lounge and the Heartland Cafe. A brief tour in the summer of 2004 included shows in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC.
