Laurel Statz is a painter and Madison area native. Her work, while figurative, is influenced by abstraction and minimalism. The paintings often have a quick and instinctual nature, capturing just what’s needed. While she often times herself to eliminate extra details and over-precision, she has ventured into more detailed works as well. Laurel does not attach narrative to her pieces. Rather, she thinks of them like a journaling process for her scatter-brained psyche. The figures in the pieces are meant to be processing tools for the artist and the viewer. For the last couple months, Jim Schwall, the guitar-playing co-leader of the Siegel-Schwall Band, has been spending most of his Monday nights hanging out at the home of Chris Wagoner and Mary Gaines, the singing/songwriting multi-instrumental couple at the heart of the Stellanovas, Moon Gypsies and, before that, Common Faces. Jim had this particular Friday booked at Mother Fools, and since they were open, he invited Mary and Chris to share the stage. Expect blues, jazz, folk and pop originals by all three, plus a few carefully chosen covers played on various bowed and plucked string instruments and whatever else they bring along.
