Laurel Statz is a painter and Madison area native. Her work, while figurative, is influenced by abstraction and minimalism. The paintings often have a quick and instinctual nature, capturing just what’s needed. While she often times herself to eliminate extra details and over-precision, she has ventured into more detailed works as well. Laurel does not attach narrative to her pieces. Rather, she thinks of them like a journaling process for her scatter-brained psyche. The figures in the pieces are meant to be processing tools for the artist and the viewer. Sonidos Suaves is a Latino folk music group based in Madison featuring popular cumbias, boleros and rancheras from throughout Latin America as well as original material. The group was founded by two brothers from El Salvador, Jorge and Antonio Quintanilla. Jorge and Antonio began performing together in the early 80's as they wrote and recorded songs inspired the the work for social justice and peace in their native El Salvador. As the name suggests this group features smooth sounds with skillful fingering of the Requinto by Antonio, beautiful vocals by Jorge and tastefull backup by Kent on Percussion and Jorge Ismael on Guitar.
