"pretty ~ ugly"

February 2026

Artist Statement Tamara Lea Kaufman’s personal artwork ranges from serious to quirky, dark, adult-themed humor. She creates multimedia assemblage, collage, and dioramas made from HO-scale railroad hobby miniatures, preserved insects, paint, embroidery, found objects, and typically discarded materials such as candy wrappers and the overlooked debris of everyday life. Gloria Niehoff, 51 --, died in her sleep on June 28, 2008.

She was born November 1, 1957 on the north side of Chicago.

As a teenager, Gloria moved to Madison to be on her own. She was involved with Briarpatch before moving on to live independently. She greatly valued her independence, her ability to manage her own resources and her privacy. Gloria worked a few years at the former Madison Opportunity Center but Gloria---s struggle with a seizure disorder prompted a retirement from work.

Gloria always enjoyed a ---good cup of coffee---, playing cards, solving word search puzzles, listening to her beloved ---Cubs--- play ball, visiting with people and going out to eat and bowling with her ---favorite--- friend, Joan. Gloria---s straight and no nonsense talk often made you realize or learn new things about yourself as well as her. Not having family in the area, Gloria created her own Madison family of friends and neighbors. She touched many lives in unusual ways and her presence will be missed.

A special thank you to the staff at Commonwealth, Paul, Mark, and Diane, her neighbor, Olga, the staff of Tellurian---s Community Intervention Team, Sarah, Jenny and Rachel, and her friends at Mother Fool---s Coffee Shop.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Friends and neighbors are invited to a memorial service for Gloria to be held at 12 noon, July 22, 2008 at the Mother Fool---s Coffee Shop at 1101 Williamson St. Madison.
