Emanation Art

Cid Freitag - December 2004

Artist's Statement:

I work in photomontage because it lets me combine realistic elements into improbable combinations. Individual elements that may seem disparate can be arranged into a new coherent whole, creating a different world out of the reality at hand. It's like bringing back vacation photos of places that didn't exist, but I went anyway.

I work intuitively, with a clear or vague idea of what the images mean, singularly or as a whole. Artistically and technically, the process involves moments of inspiration followed by hours of tedium. Often a piece will evolve through changes of plan or serendipitous accidents, gaining elements I hadn't anticipated at first.

I work from self inquiry and observation. I use personal symbols and include individual photos that have particular meaning to me such as pictures of myself and places of personal interest. My work is a reflection of who I am, where I've been and where I hope to go. In drawing from my own life, I may find themes that run through all lives, themes of yearning and mystery, change and curiosity.

Bio:

Cid Freitag has created photomontages for more than 20 years, starting out with black-and-white photos, an X-Acto knife and rubber cement. The subject themes vary, being fed by eclectic interests and introspection. Her influences and inspirations come from diverse sources including the elements, plants, the cosmos, stones, places, spiritual practices, personal transformation and a human existence.

The name "Emanation Art" came when someone purchased a montage to mail to friend. The friend claimed that the package emanated before she opened it.
