"The Spectator"

December 2025

Laurel Statz is a painter and Madison area native. Her work, while figurative, is influenced by abstraction and minimalism. The paintings often have a quick and instinctual nature, capturing just what’s needed. While she often times herself to eliminate extra details and over-precision, she has ventured into more detailed works as well. Laurel does not attach narrative to her pieces. Rather, she thinks of them like a journaling process for her scatter-brained psyche. The figures in the pieces are meant to be processing tools for the artist and the viewer. It's too bad SPOT got identified with the limitations of punk rock. Although he was once a general in that army (see SST, Descendents, Minutemen, blah blah blah) he ran outta that ballpark a long time ago and last year published the photography book "Sounds of Two Eyes Opening" a document of SoCal culture he captured between 1969-1982. Really, at the core of it all, the guy is a multi-instrumentalist/composer/performer whose music revolved mostly around Traditional and Celtic styles through the 90s & 00s. Then he ran away from that but couldn't fight the urge to let the Jazz, Rock, Folk, Avant- Garde, Country, Garage-Trash and Classical (and all the other styles that made him an insomniac) pull him back onto the stage. Hell, he's been actively playing music since the early 60s so what else could he do?

Equally at home in both the electric and acoustic realms, his songs and instrumentals prompted one writer to state, "One listens to his music and tries to place his style. He comes in like a whirlwind, and leaves with everyone having a sense of liking what he saw and heard, but not understanding it. Spot would not have it any other way." (Jude Vivona /Houston Entertainer Examiner; September 25, 2009)

Bucky Pope will be performing solo versions of songs by his new band Negative Example, as well as interpretations of pop songs, and retreads of choice material from the legendary Tar Babies.

SPOT and Bucky will team up for a short set between their respective performances.
