The Lonelyhearts w/ Doug Pahl

Friday, September 12, 2008

On record the Lonelyhearts' songs build upon waves of synths, guitars, and harmony vocals. In live performances, the band keep it simple: one keyboard, one guitar, two voices. Critics have compared them to the acoustic songcraft of the Mountain Goats as well as the synth-rock of Grandaddy.

Doug Pahl is a Madison born and raised musician with a penchant for clever lyrics and a rare talent for the acoustic guitar. The power behind his every piece is a well crafted song structure and chord progression with an overlay of heartfelt vocal melody.

A quote about a previous show: ---the concert at Mother Fools was great. That new song about him and his friend was a good example of how story telling rivets people; you could hear a pin drop in that place. It reminded me of what the singer Phranc said about why she quit punk and started doing folk music-- because she wanted an audience that cared about the words. - Nick---
