Sat, Apr 11 Papa John Kolstad w/ Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers w/ Boo Bradley - $7

Legendary folk-blues singer, guitar player and entertainer Papa John Kolstad has been performing more than 40 years, blazing a musical trail across these United States. He performed regularly on The Prairie Home Companion radio show with Garrison Keillor, has been a featured performer at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Philadelphia Folk Festival and the Winnipeg Folk Festival. In addition he has worked with David Bromberg, Ricky Nelson, Joan Armatrading, Odetta, U.Utah Phillips, Jim Post, Willie Murphy, Spider John Koerner, Dave Ray, Lazy Bill Lucas and many others. Papa John is prominently featured in a chapter of the recent book, “The West Bank Boogie”, covering the music and musicians of the 60’s and 70’ West Bank Music Scene. Papa John with Clint Hoover won the Road To Memphis, a juried musical event, and represented the Twin Cities at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN February 2007.

Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers, a duo from Viroqua, Wisconsin, perform traditional American fiddle tunes and sing tight harmony songs, including country, vaudeville, hits of the 1920s and 30s, and original songs and fiddle tunes. Peppered into their ever-evolving repertoire is also music from other lands— Canada, Transylvania, Sweden, Mexico, and Venezuela to name a few—that has caught their fancy. The duo perform frequent concerts at a variety of venues and events and are known for engaging their audiences and putting them at ease with their light-hearted stage presence. They also regularly perform as a dance band for square and contra dances. Though their dance repertoire includes tunes from across the continent, they often favor traditional fiddle music that represents their roots in the rural Upper Midwest. The Sapsuckers are Nikki Grossman on fiddle, vocals, and guitar; and Joe Hart on guitar and vocals. Hart and Grossman are also highly skilled professional kazooists. Both are seasoned musicians and performers who have worked, together and separately, in numerous other old-time, folk, rock, country bands, and other musical projects. They are regular performers on the Kickapoo Barn Dance, a live radio musical variety show on their local community radio station, WDRT (www.wdrt.org). Formed in 2013, the Sapsuckers released their first CD, "Speaking Of Music...Here Are the Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers!" in early 2014. Their new album, "Ocooch Mountain Home," is due for release in early 2015.

Boo Bradley is good time two-man Hokum junk and jive orchestra who are as fun to watch as they are to listen to. Meeting up in 2007, Boo Mullarky and Bradley Selz took to Madison, Wisconsin's illustrious State Street with the full intention of bringing the rollicking sounds and antics of the early 20th century jug bands back to life. They quickly became known as the go-to act for fun in the sun at Madison's legendary farmers' market. Soon they were being asked to perform at festivals and shows around the state, sharing the stage with well-known roots performers such as the Carolina Chocolate Drops and Frank Fairfield. This refreshing “little jug band that could” features a delightfully rich and clunky sonic pallete that is sure to cure what ails you!
