"The Spectator"

December 2025

Laurel Statz is a painter and Madison area native. Her work, while figurative, is influenced by abstraction and minimalism. The paintings often have a quick and instinctual nature, capturing just what’s needed. While she often times herself to eliminate extra details and over-precision, she has ventured into more detailed works as well. Laurel does not attach narrative to her pieces. Native Eloquence
Multi-Instrumentalist Adam Hirsch weaves dense sonic tapestries from disparate influences, Hirsch brings to bear a background in jazz, a keen ear for beats, and a native honesty. These songs have a true lyricist at their core: \"Time on my hands and I can-t wash it off\", he sings, and time is a major theme on this record. Hirsch juxtaposes this preoccupation with time-s passing against the echoing dreaminess of the production, and these contrasts are ultimately what make this record so inviting. Adam is an expert at balancing diverse impulses and creating space for the listener in between.

Original Mechanical Mouse
Joel Collinsworth is a third generation writer who struggled with short story publishing for nearly a decade. In 2001 he returned to college, got a couple short stories published in the literary journal, and won the Freshman Writing Prize. Joel began songwriting in 2006 and in 2010 began using the band name Original Mechanical Mouse. Influences include, Elliot Smith, Nick Drake, Andrew Bird, The Shins, Jim James, Conor Oberst, Andy Hull, Aly Spaltro, and many other artists from the modern folk genre. He is unsigned with over three-hundred original songs, an EP, and numerous songs online.

When you hear the name of Joel Collinsworth\'s solo project, Original Mechanical Mouse, it\'s tempting to conjure the mechanical mouse from the Tom & Jerry cartoon (used by Jerry to fool Tom). But concentrate instead on original, for it\'s Collinsworth\'s uniqueness that sets OMM apart. The acoustic guitar arrangements can be haunting and spare (like John Frusciante\'s To Record Only Water for Ten Days) or quietly tender like Grandaddy\'s \"Underneath The Weeping Willow.\" -. -Oh Yeah, Basement Tapes! is a work of art recalling Neil Young at his most beautiful.- - Bryan Cahpin Chicago Indie Music Live
