"The Spectator"

December 2025

Laurel Statz is a painter and Madison area native. Her work, while figurative, is influenced by abstraction and minimalism. The paintings often have a quick and instinctual nature, capturing just what’s needed. While she often times herself to eliminate extra details and over-precision, she has ventured into more detailed works as well. Laurel does not attach narrative to her pieces. While most artists pack their bags for bigtime in New York, 26 year-old Toronto import Deanna Devore opted in 2006 to make music in Chicago. Just unpacked, she played anywhere she could find a stage and a PA system while spending her days at Steve Albini-s Electrical Audio, recording and co-producing a seven-song EP with Bjorn Thorsrud (Smashing Pumpkins, Dandy Warhols), on which she played nearly every instrument with some backup from drumming heavyweight Matt Walker (Morrissey, Garbage).

Raised by musical parents, her voice, guitar playing and songwriting well exceed her years as she carries a lyrical sensitivity, a maturity and sophistication that spans across electro-dance, alternative, Brazilian jazz and orchestral territories. With an ever-expanding song catalogue, Devore and her band have headlined and shared sold-out local, regional, and national fest stages such as CMJ, NXNE, and 80/35 with touring acts Tigercity, Bonobo, Blind Pilot and fellow Canadians Basia Bulat and Juno Award-winning Lights. Earlier this year, Devore released her second EP \"X Number Of Days\". She wrote, performed and produced all the songs on the album and is working on a tour in support of it later this year.
