Laurel Statz is a painter and Madison area native. Her work, while figurative, is influenced by abstraction and minimalism. The paintings often have a quick and instinctual nature, capturing just what’s needed. While she often times herself to eliminate extra details and over-precision, she has ventured into more detailed works as well. Laurel does not attach narrative to her pieces. Rather, she thinks of them like a journaling process for her scatter-brained psyche. The figures in the pieces are meant to be processing tools for the artist and the viewer. Hal Rammel (amplified palette) and Matt Turner (cello) present an evening of improvisations to celebrate their new recording, Fractures and Phantoms (Penumbra).

Hal Rammel designs and builds musical instruments for the recording and performance of original compositions and improvisations. He has released recordings on Atavistic, Crouton, Soutrane, and Penumbra Music. His most recent recording is titled Agog and features a variety of solo percussion pieces using tabletop arrangements of amplified palettes.

Cellist Matt Turner performs in myriad of styles and has performed in Canada, Europe and Asia. He appears on over 100 recordings on Sketch/Harmonia Mundi, Nato /Hope Street, Ayler, Clean Feed, Illusions, Music and Arts, Accurate, Polyvinyl, Cadence Jazz and others and currently performs and records with Bill Carrothers, Randy Sabien and the Jean-Marc Foltz Trio.
