Laurel Statz is a painter and Madison area native. Her work, while figurative, is influenced by abstraction and minimalism. The paintings often have a quick and instinctual nature, capturing just what’s needed. While she often times herself to eliminate extra details and over-precision, she has ventured into more detailed works as well. Laurel does not attach narrative to her pieces. Rather, she thinks of them like a journaling process for her scatter-brained psyche. The figures in the pieces are meant to be processing tools for the artist and the viewer. All proceeds to benefit Haiti Relief efforts.

Each member of this southwest Wisconsin area band shares a love of blues, folk, rock, and acoustic music, creating a blend that is unique to the Mothers. Stripping away excess until only bare essentials remain, the result is soulful and haunting -folk-rock-blues with bite- that bears little resemblance to bluegrass groups with similar instrumentation. The vocal harmonies carry a simple beauty, and the stark lyrics conjure compelling visual images. Top it off with some rock and roll attitude and that's the Mothers!
