"The Spectator"

December 2025

Laurel Statz is a painter and Madison area native. Her work, while figurative, is influenced by abstraction and minimalism. The paintings often have a quick and instinctual nature, capturing just what’s needed. While she often times herself to eliminate extra details and over-precision, she has ventured into more detailed works as well. Laurel does not attach narrative to her pieces. Carl Johns got his start as the songwriter and singer with the group Noahjohn, which started as a loose collective and later became a 5-piece band. From 1999-2002 Noahjohn released four albums each with their own style/tone, spanning the genres of country, rock, folk, drone, and psychedelic, including a protest album as Eugene Chadbourne's backing band. In addition the group toured extensively in the US and England.

As of late Carl has released two albums for a more pop-oriented project under the moniker Charlemagne. The newest Charlemagne album, Detour Allure, was released last October and Carl is currently touring the US in support of it with various musicians accompanying.

On a break in between tours, Carl will perform this evening solo, playing some Noahjohn songs, some Charlemagne songs, some new songs, and a couple covers. This is a rare solo show and extra special since Motherfools was the venue were Carl played his first Noahjohn show in 1999.

Also on the bill are local songwriters Dietrich Gosser and Vid Libert.
