Laurel Statz is a painter and Madison area native. Her work, while figurative, is influenced by abstraction and minimalism. The paintings often have a quick and instinctual nature, capturing just what’s needed. While she often times herself to eliminate extra details and over-precision, she has ventured into more detailed works as well. Laurel does not attach narrative to her pieces. Charlie Kohlhase and Matt Langley first began working together in 1977, when they were members of the New Hampshire based quintet ESP. They did their first duet performances in 1983. They would also, on occasion, work as a front-line with bass and drums. This activity solidified into the Charlie Kohlhase Quintet in 1989. The CKQ toured extensively in the US, performed with Roswell Rudd and John Tchicai, and released six critically acclaimed recordings on the Accurate, CIMP, Nada and Boxholder labels. In addition to rehearsing compositions and concepts for improvising, Kohlhase and Langley practiced together regularly for many years - working on the building blocks of music - intervals, harmonies, overtones. The years of hard work have given their Duo performances an organic unity that can only be achieved over time - these musicians are capable of improvising simultaneously while still being aware of the other?s line and the overall flow of the piece. Their Duo work was first documented on the cassette-only \"Charlie Kohlhase Saxophone Quartet\" release in 1985. More recently, Boxholder Records has issued their definitive Duo statement, \"You Start,\" in 2000. Kohlhase and Langley toured the Midwest and South as a Duo in 2001 and have since been appearing regularly in New England and New York.
