Title: Select Works 2013-14
Artist: Jessica J. Ruiz
Born 1988, Seoul, South Korea
Jessica Ruiz is an artist who paints animals. The animal is depicted through whimsical and imaginative abstractions of different animal motifs and environments, challenging the viewer to see different materials and paint as the living animal-thing. She is interested in making the inanimate animate through seeing the animal as a composite of ourselves and matter. Loss, paranoia, anxiety and cuteness are salient themes in her work, signaling the anthropomorphic divide between us and them.
Jessica’s work has been shown in Madison, Wisconsin at the 7th Floor Gallery, Art Lofts Gallery, Bright Red Studios, community centers and the Office of the Provost at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Jessica studied philosophy at Barnard College Columbia University before pursuing art. Since graduating in 2011, Jessica moved to Wisconsin to attend University of Wisconsin-Madison on a full scholarship. She currently lives in Madison, WI where she is studying for her MA/MFA in painting.
